The Village is billed as the first of its kind in the country — a new model of housing for intellectually and developmentally disabled adults, combining affordable, independent living with an on-site support staff and 24-hour security and help from family and community volunteers.
The Village, spanning 32 acres, is conveniently located near mass transportation and close to commercial areas to promote employment opportunities and social engagement with the community. Residents live in a gated neighborhood encompassing 40 one story buildings with 96 one or two bedroom apartment-style homes that encourage independent living. Nearby are not only job opportunities but educational and recreational facilities, worship, libraries and public transportation. The Village also promotes socializing among residents, with regular activities in a clubhouse that has movie, game and workout rooms and a cafeteria that serves dinner every night for $8, among other things. Also there is a community pool and basketball court. Design goals paramount to the project included providing an affordable housing option that is fully accessible and provides a safe environment for residents.
